They are not having difficulty in controlling them, in fact its quite the opposite. They are simply being overwhelmed by them. This is very normal for people who have trouble with thought/emotion separation. The fact that they are in a controlled environment allows them to feel more in control of what is going on.

Mindfulness helps you to understand what you are doing, why it is happening, and how you can reduce how much you are aware of it. Meditation helps to bring us back into a state of inner calm. It helps the mind to think clearly and to become less distracted. This is important because the mind is very, very hard to control. A mind controlled only by thoughts can be very, very frustrating.
