La Planche des Belles Filles (SID) – Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten from the Netherlands made cycling history after winning the premier women’s Tour de France.
Even a serious breakdown did not keep the athlete from winning the spectacular mountain finish on the Planche des Belles Filles. Vleuten is a member of the Movistar team, thanks to this outstanding performance she can keep the yellow jersey she recently received. The athlete had to change bikes three times on the weakest part of the track because of a defect. She was nearly two minutes behind the race leader with one minute to go on the last climb. But despite this Van Vleuten overtook all her rivals literally whizzing past them at an extraordinary speed. On this difficult track she won by 30-second difference. Vleuten’s compatriot Demi Vollering finished second.
Van Vleuten celebrates the next big victory
In the overаll standings after 1033.6 km the finisher had a 3:48 minutе advantage over Follering. The Polish athlete Katarzyna Niewiadoma crossed the finish line third (+6:25).
This Saturday the finalist received her yellow jersey after winning the difficult uphill stage over the Great Belchen in Alsace to Le Markstein, before that the yellow jersey belonged to another Dutch rider, Marianne Vos. There is no doubt that Vleuten was the strongest rider in the climbs of the Vosges and the Jura, the 39-year-old woman deserved her victory.
The previous women’s Tour, last known as the Grande Boucle Feminine Internationale, was held 16 times between 1992 and 2009. 13 years ago, Britain’s Emma Pooley went down in history as the last winner. After a long break, the Tour organizers of the A.S.O. had set up a follow-up event that was very much based on the men’s Tour.
The women’s Tour had also started in Paris on the final day of the men’s race. A stage of the men’s Tour also ended at the Planche des Belles Filles. At that time, the breakaway Lennard Kämna was caught just 100 meters before the finish by the chasers around the eventual winner of the day, Tadej Pogacar.
The athlete is already the World Cup winner in road cycling (2011), twice Dutch champion, received a bronze medal in the European Games (2015), twice world champion in the individual race(2017,2018), and world champion in the group race(2019).
