In the beginning of the summer, I decided to give myself a crash course on calculus in order to make more informed decisions about my life. I’m a math geek and I’ve used it most of my life as a hobby. So, being able to apply it to my life was a big deal to me.
Not only is calculus a huge part of modern-day math, but it really is the pinnacle of mathematical understanding. And, more specifically, solving quadratics. What most people are often unaware of, however, is that there is a very specific set of quadratics, which are solved by quadratic equations, which are also solved by the quadratic formula.
This is a little bit of a math-joke. I’m not going to dive too deeply into the details. But, if you have a question about quadratics, there’s a very simple way to get it answered. Just look up the quadratic formula on the internet and make sure that the first letter is a capital V. In other words, look for the one that says quadratic formula.

If you’re asking for the quadratic formula for a fourth degree equation, look for a formula that says “x^4 – 2x^2 + 1.” For a second degree equation, look for a formula that says “x^2 – 1.” And for a third degree equation, look for a formula that says “x – 1.
